How I feel when people say, “Well if you want to defund the police, Just stop calling them. Just have them not show up to your house when you need them.” 💔Everyone needs protection, but not everyone finds safety in the police.
There is nothing more human than not only empathizing with a story different from your own, but actually seeing yourself in someone else’s experience. This opening page of @kcornv’s #TheUndocumentedAmericans has taken me back to that terrifying night in 2016. I remember how the day went. We were wrapping the last episode of Season 1 of @dearwhitepeople & we all woke up that day imagining that we would go to sleep knowing we elected the first woman President. By the end of the day, I was many wines in & ultimately ended up on my friend’s bedroom floor sobbing uncontrollably on the phone with my mom. I was terrified because I had a grim idea of what a trump presidency would mean for so many Americans. That night was bleak. That next morning was an emotional (and actual) hangover from hell. That’s all. I just wanted to share that memory because our stories connect us. 🌹
A lot of the people who want to keep trump in office are the same people who would’ve fought on the confederate side of the Civil War to keep black folks enslaved. It’s the same energy... Let’s keep it real. Having only two political parties to choose from will never be practical or pure, but one thing is for sure: one side promotes an intolerable evil we can’t move forward with. It’s what our ancestors knew then, and it’s what we know now. Let’s take the step towards a future that doesn’t embolden or defend white supremacy. The dem ticket is not going to save the world, but it will 1) Change the way our history books look for the better, which on its own is an important representation to not overlook. 2) Give us a better chance to effectively fight for/ have civil discourse about liberation for everyone in this country. • Remember, only 58% of voters participated in the 2016 election... and keep in mind that states like Michigan, where there was a 0.4% drop in black voter participation from the 2012 election, are not hard to flip. The 2016 election was so close there that just a 0.2 percentage point margin (about 10,000 votes) separated trump and Clinton. This matters because 🗣Hillary won the Popular Vote! Almost 3 million more people in this country chose her as our President, but the electoral college votes based on state by state majority & has as much weight to elect as members of Congress each state is allotted—which is determined by the Census (which happens once every 10 years & only takes 10 seconds to complete & you can still respond to!) Your vote does matter. Don’t sit idly by. Complete your Census & Mail in your Election ballot as soon as you can. 📮There are 62 days until the next U.S. Presidential Election.
When you’re white in America you can murder people, attempt to surrender, grab your assault rifle, and the police will literally pass you by because they aren’t threatened by you—but you knew that. Don’t show me any more black folks being shot by police. Show more of this so I don’t have to waste my time with these qanon, racist, trump supporters who deny the reality we’re in. Dear Nikki Haley: America IS a racist country. You don’t get to erase history. You don’t get to deny the blood and backs this country’s wealth and economy were built on. Dear Mike Pence, you know what we don’t want? “Law and order”. Wanna know why? Those laws you’re thinking of don’t protect the people. That order you’re speaking of is a system of hierarchy that doesn’t give a fuck about black people. There are too many things happening in this world for us to be debating whether an 🍊 should be a dictator for 12 more years. Y’all, just vote so we can actually have a chance to have the conversations and fight for what we want our government to change for the better. “Law and order” does not mean “freedom and peace”. It means “subjugate and police”.
We’re over it. O-V-E-R. OVER IT. Pull up to the BNC tomorrow 8/28 via @mvmnt4blklives ✌🏽
