#travelpictuesday Posters honoring Sultan Qaboos bin Said of Oman. 11/14/19
On January 10th, Sultan Qaboos bin Said passed away after a long illness. Over his nearly fifty year reign, he single-handedly transformed Oman from an impoverished primitive place into a modern economic and social success story. So respected, he maintained close relations with Israel and Iran and facilitated numerous backdoor communications for regional allies and adversaries. Of all the countries in the Middle East I visited, Oman was by far the most tolerant and welcoming. The Sultan was beloved by his people and I couldn’t drive a block without seeing his image. His replacement has a big task ahead. 🇴🇲
#travelpictuesday Street food market Jakarta, Indonesia March 5th, 2018. #archives —Jakarta is a sprawling mega city of nearly 30 million people. Over these last few weeks it has seen some of the worst flooding in decades. Ferocious monsoons that have killed 60 people with thousands displaced from their homes. Like Venice, the city is sinking at an alarming rate. Years of inaction by the local government have led to infrastructure not prepared for the challenges brought by climate change. Jakarta is becoming a microcosm of the larger climate change issue. During these recent floods, wealthy neighborhoods built higher held up fine, the poor ones literally left to drown. As we saw during Katrina in the 🇺🇸, weather events affect the most vulnerable first, fastest and hardest.

Something I’m going to do in 2020 is share more pictures from my past travels. I’ve realized there are many that are still quite pertinent and can help contextualize current events. So expect one #TravelPicTuesday a week till 2021.
Pictured- Kangaroo near Mogareeka, New South Wales Australia. Feb 19, 2017. This area is now burning 🔥and over HALF A BILLION animals are feared dead.
I drove from Sydney to Melbourne over a few days in February 2017. Took Highway 1 (A1) through much of the towns now hit hardest by the bushfires. Bateman’s Bay, Eden and so many rural places in the Bega Valley. Would take small roads to the coast and then wind back to the A1. Knowing the inherent kindness of these communities, it breaks my heart to see them destroyed. Not to mention the toll taken on Australia’s unique wildlife. The intensity of these fires is caused by human exacerbated #climatechange. This is the new normal. This is our world. Nothing else matters if this isn’t meaningfully acknowledged and confronted.
