DRY EYE SYNDROME
Ever since the lockdown began, I’ve noticed that a lot of patients have been complaining of foreign body sensation, eye pain and heaviness, blurry vision, or what they usually describe as ‘a feeling that my eyes are tired.’ These are all symptoms of DRY EYE SYNDROME.
Because people have just been home all day working on a computer or using their smartphones or other portable digital devices, we tend to blink our eyes less fully and less frequently, which leads to greater tear evaporation. This will eventually result in an increased risk of dry eye symptoms.
Other causes of dry eyes include:
* Contact lens wear
* Medications - anti-allergy drugs, anti-hypertensives
* Health conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, lupus
* Deficiency of tear production
Here are 8 steps that you can do at home to manage your symptoms of DRY EYE SYNDROME:
Check your medications
* Eat 3 healthy meals everyday
* Avoid pollution and other irritants
* Minimize wearing contact lenses
* Use lubricant eye drops
* Hydrate and humidify
* Blink! - Try to blink every 5 seconds especially when you are in front of a digital screen
Because of the pandemic that we are facing, everyone is just in in front of the TV watching Netflix, in front of the computer working from home, or using gadgets like cellphones, tablets and the like for their day to day needs. The prolonged exposure to digital screen devices is often a major issue nowadays because of the consequent DIGITAL EYE STRAIN.
* blurred vision
* dry eyes
* neck and shoulder pain
And these symptoms may be caused by the following factors:
* poor lighting
* glare from a digital screen
* improper viewing distances
* poor seating posture
* uncorrected vision problems
* a combination of these factors
To help prevent digital eye strain, we should all follow the 20 -20 - 20 rule.
Take a 20 second break - every 20 minutes - then focus on something 20 feet away
By improving the conditions of your working environment and doing the 20 - 20 - 20 rule, we can minimize and help alleviate the symptoms of digital eye strain.

Feels just like yesterday when I was talking to my high school classmate @luislimlingan about basketball. More than 20 years later, we’re still in touch but the discussion has shifted. Now he’s asking my medical opinion on the pandemic so he can make a forecast for investing as he’s now working as a stock broker. At the same time our talk made me think about what to do with my savings 🤔 #adulting
