Great little story. ❤️Today while trying to find folks to talk to about the heat and fire dangers/concerns, I met a wonderful lady and her friend. Kamala Sekhon (in the middle) was a pistol! I liked her right away. We talked about India, of course I asked her if she could make #roti She proudly informed me that she had just become a US citizen and hated complaining about anything, especially the sun! Before I could say much, she gifted me two bracelets : one silver, one rose gold. She’s Sikh and they can only wear certain things. I’ve always revered the #sikh religion and customs. They are such pacifists. ❤️ So I was very excited to receive them from Kamala. It would be rude not to! But then, photojournalist Joel Cooke chimed in and said, “Well now you have to gift Kamala something!” And lo and behold in my jean pocket I had a gold rock, a crystal. Yes who else carries crystals/ rocks? Lol it’s apparently a protective stone used to fight off negative spirits. I know some may be against all that. But I’ve always liked rocks. It’s my lucky rock. Anyway, Joel said he always wanted a Sikh bracelet too so he was kinda jealous 😉. She actually offered it to him first, but it didn’t fit! It was for me! Thanks Kamala! Memorable times out here in Santa Clarita. I live for moments like these with our viewers and new friends!❤️ (i posted a pic of what the gold crystal looked like) #newsies #funonthejob #knowthyneighbors #nbcla #reporting #sikh
Back to class today for Hope View Elementary School part of the Ocean View School District in #huntingtonbeach 🤙🏽 We were there as kids returned. They seemed SO thrilled! Here’s how it works there...
Every morning students must enter campus at an assigned gate where
temp checks are taken. Masks must be worn at all times.
Students and teachers each have 3 sided plexiglass partitions at their desks.
All the campuses in the OC are also using hybrid schedules that allow a portion of students back at one time while others learn online — to help maintain social distancing by keeping classes small. Thanks @hope_view_hawks for having us! Good luck to you guys! Continued blessings and health! Learn as much as you can! ❤️ #backtoclass #covid #backtoschool2020 #oc #huntingtonbeach #froglegs😂
Finally got to put on a little black dress for a good cause! ❤️ It was so fun getting to co-emcee the virtual gala for @laplazala with my dearest friend and colleague @duniaelvir La Plaza De Cultura y Artes is my favorite museum (in full disclosure) The Mexican American museum is a TREASURE located across Placita Olvera in downtown LA. The virtual gala is October 14th, you can watch and support from your home! Guest appearances and performances by @loslobos and @la_marisoul I’ll remind y’all again as we get closer to the date...in my IG stories. Thanks again Board of Directors for having me, the honor is all mine. ❤️🙏🏽 #mexicanamerican #chicano #raza #texmex #history #losangeles #nbcla
Just took a quick tour thru #valyermo one of the antelope valley communities ravaged by the #bobcatfire Fire crews can’t tell us yet how many homes/structures have been destroyed. They are working non stop. A local at the Chevron told me a 92 year old neighbor lost his home. There are many smoldering areas, downed power lines. And boots on The ground. They managed to save the post office there and look at this home, apparently it used to be a fire station. It too was saved from the fire! No one was home, but you can see evidence of a fight well fought to protect the historic dwelling. ❤️ (correction:the road is not 138, it’s Valeyermo Road) #valyermo #bobcatfire #nbcla #fire #antelopevalley
As the sun comes up (that orange glow is smoke) fire crews will be able to get a better count on the number of homes and structures destroyed by fire in the #antelopevalley They haven’t been able to asses the damage because they have been so busy. Juniper Hills, Valyermo, and Big Pines all impacted and evacuated. The #bobcat fire now over 105k acres, 15% contained. It was very active overnight according to US Forest Service due to poor humidity, and spotting which continue to be challenging. Stick with @nbcla and pray for all those families left without a home, now having to rebuild. ❤️🙏🏽
Poor bees and wildlife, the fires have them displaced 😞. It eventually flew away! A reminder to beeee nice! Lol 🌸🐝 #bees #fire #bobcat #beenice
I busted out the goggles. It’s bad. 💨 Brace yourselves. Update: Day 11, #bobcatfire Close to 42k acres still 3% containment. We are surrounded by smoke in #monrovia Canyon Park where crews are fighting fire with fire. A nearby dam helps with water drops too. Controlled burns ahead of the perimeter of the #bobcatfire have helped spare homes along the foothills, and Mount Wilson Observatory, where yesterday flames were 500 feet away from the TV towers and science center! 🙏🏽 So much gratitude for our firefighters. Evacuations remain in place for parts of Arcadia and Sierra Madre. (North of Elkins Avenue and east of Santa Anita Avenue.) Stick with @nbcla for updates. On a lighter note: The Platters hit song “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” keeps playing in my head. I like Bryan Ferry’s versión too. Lol Be safe amigos and God Bless those hard working crews!! #smokeadvisory #nbcla #monrovia #fire #smokegetsinyoureyes
#bobcatfire update! This is a controlled burn in Monrovia ahead of the fire perimeter to keep #bobcatfire away from homes as it continues to threaten foothill communities growing to 40k acres and has gone DOWN in containment to 3% @mtwilsonobservatory also had to be evacuated! According to them the fire is knocking on their door! Our TV towers are up there! And no winds means lingering smoky air. Smoke
advisory through Tuesday afternoon for portions of Los Angeles, Orange, San
Bernardino and Riverside counties Foothill communities in San Gabriel Valley still under evacuation warnings right now,
Sunday's evacuation order for Sierra Madre and Arcadia residents north of Elkins Avenue east of Santa Anita Avenue REMAINS. Stick with @nbcla and be safe!!! #controlledburn
Sound up. A “distress call” to God this morning from Assistant Pastor, Patrick Lyons of Faith Inspirational in Compton during his sermon today. Just blocks away from where 2 LASD deputies were shot while inside their patrol cars at 7pm yesterday. Those deputies are fighting for their lives tonight. Lyons, says as a retired lasd deputy himself his heart is heavy and encourages open dialogue, guidance and a change of attitude from humanity. I’d like to thank Pastor Lyons for lending his voice and having the courage to speak from the heart to offer insight and hope to really all of us grieving together during these times, hoping for a better tomorrow. We will hear more from him and others tonight on the @nbcla news after football. #compton #faith #comptonshooting #mayday #violence #nbcla #mayday #hope #faith

Flags are flying half-staff across the New York area in remembrance of the thousands of lives lost to the terror attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
Ceremonies throughout the day will mark 19 years since the devastating attacks.
UPDATE: The LA County Dept. of Health, walks back ban, and now “recommends” against trick or treating. Earlier before public outcry, the county Department of Public Health had banned door-to-door or car-to-car trick-or-treating for Halloween, along with Halloween parties, carnivals and haunted houses. According to the county, online parties or contests, such as pumpkin-carving or costume contests, are allowed, as are car parades and drive-thru attractions. Drive-thru events can also include distribution of "treat bags," but they are limited to "commercially packaged non-perishable treats,'' and recipients must remain in their vehicles.
Drive-in movie nights are also acceptable, along with ``Halloween-themed meals at outdoor restaurants,'' art installations and decorations of homes and yards.
As always, people taking part in any such events must wear face coverings, practice social distancing and adhere to other health. @nbcla
